The goal of this project is to clean up and merge duplicate profiles related to the Zeller families who descended from brothers Johann Heinrich Zeller and Johan George Zeller. These two were sons of Jacques Zeller and Chlotilde De Valois Zeller who remain somewhat of a mystery.

The Zeller families had some measure of prominence in Berks County, Pennsylvania in the 1700s, and I would like to honor their memory by cleaning up errors and merging stray profiles.

The bulk of our intended work is now complete, but there is always room for more research. Feel free to send me a message if you have other suggestions or clues to track down.

Here's what we have accomplished:

We've also been able to add biographical data and source references to many existing profiles. There is a little more work that could be done to merge a few more profiles, and I will probably initiate a merge from time to time in the weeks ahead. We have cleaned up a lot of redundancy and added a lot of new information in the last six or eight weeks. I appreciate the cooperation of everyone who allowed me to complete merges and modify profile information.

I have discovered a lot of new source information and have shifted my own attention to working out profile information for my direct ancestry and their siblings. I want to especially thank Dana Schreder who shared a link to a online repository that I had not fully explored. After a bit of poking around, it led me to John Vallentine's book that documents the history of so many Zellers who descended from Johann Heinrich and Johann George. I was gratified to find my own grandfather mentioned in the book.

Update March 14, 2016

  • Jacques Zeller is merged and has a new biography
  • Chlotilde De Valois is merged but needs a new unified biography
  • Johann Heinrich Zeller is merged and has a new biography
  • Anna Maria Briegal is merged with a new biography, but we've discovered another profile that matches her and have proposed a merge. Thus far, we've had no response to the request to merge or to a subsequent request to join trusted list. So we are in a bit of a holding pattern.

Professional genealogists Henry " Hank", Jones and 'John Valentine worked together on the history of the Zeller immigrants to New York prior to Hank's 1985 "The Palatine Families of New York-1710" book. 2012 John Valentine published a book "The Tulpehocken Zellers and their Descendants". John had viewed the microfilm of NY Gov. Hunter's subsistence records. The recorded Zeller information was totally different from Hank's Etzbach/Wissen Zeller immigrant information, which was all "could be" in his 1985 book. I emailed him asking why and he said John had never told him of his viewing. Hank read it and said it proved that his previous assumptions were wrong. The 1710 NY Zeller immigrants were Johann George Zeller and his sons Johannes and Johann Henrich and a girl, age 9 who lived with Henrich until she married Johannes Schaeffer. Johann George Zeller and his son Johannes lived with Widow Anna Batdorf ( aka Battorffin) and her two step children for the two years of the subsistence. Kin always come to the aid and protection of a widow when her husband died. Peter Batdorf died at London or at sea. Anna was Peter's second wife and was a Zeller or their father. Johann George Zeller, married a Batdorf woman. Either way, the evidence shows both families had come from Helmershausen.

When researching my wife’s Zeller line in the 1970s and 80s I received a seven page pamphlet from the Zeller Family Association of Lebanon Co PA. The father of Johannes and Johan Heinrich was Phillip Zeller, a vine dresser, not Jacques Zeller.

GENEALOGY OF THE ZELLER FAMILY JOHN (HANS) 1711

Page1 FORWARD John Zeller first appeared in the records when he was coming to this country at St. Catherine’s Parish in England and the date was June 1709. He was listed as a cooper along with his father, Phillip, his mother, two brothers and a sister. His father was listed as a vine dresser. John was listed as 23years of age. John’s first appearance in America was on the Hunter Ration List of June 24,1711 in he state of New York. He was married to Catherine, (last name unknown) at this time) in 1712. Living and working in New York until moving into Pennsylvania some time in the 1720s where he took up farming on a one 125 acre plot near what is now known as Millbach, Lebanon County along route 419 where he raised a family and died 1737.

Anna Margaretha Zoeller is thought to have been a sister of Heinrich and George. She married a Schaeffer and stayed in Schoharie County, New York (she did not go to Berks County).

Are you interested in including her in this project?

Thus far, we've merged Jacques Zeller into one profile and we've merged Johann Heinrich into one profile.

I think we'll take a look at Chlotilde next.

Stay tuned.
